What to Consider When Buying an Air Purifier

Are you a smoker? What about a pet owner? If so, there is a good chance that the air inside your home isn’t as healthy as it could or should be. That is why you may want to think about purchasing an air purifier. Air purifiers are electronic machines that work to cleanup the air. They do this by trapping, and often eliminating, harmful bacteria and air particles. In fact, you don’t even have to be a pet owner or a smoker to benefit from the use of an air purifier; anyone can. For that reason, there is a good chance that you may be interested in purchasing an air purifier for your home.

Honeywell 38002 Enviracare Universal Replacement Pre-Filter Honeywell 38002 Enviracare Universal Replacement Pre-Filter

....what's to review? yeah, it's a pre-filter. Nothing that's really performance related to talk about here, so I'll just say they are easy to fit, easy to put on, take off, and if you buy enough of them to get free shipping from amazon, they're a pretty good deal!

If I knew the filter replacements were going to be this crappy, I'd never have purchased the 17000. The filter, to work right, has to be doubled. That effectively doubles the price of the filters. The filters themselves look moth eaten, weak and flimsy, cheap and really laughable. Good old american product made by ebaneezer to save his buck and take ours.

This filter(from honeywell) still shed lots of carbon (black) particulate, especially when you have to cut to trim to size. These are very fine dust particles. Some of which i am sure clogged the HEPA. I dont believed previous report that said the Honeywell brand of pre-filter dont shed.

Simple to replace original filter, competitive price to other retailers. Air purifier has made a huge difference in allergy suffering!

I needed a prefilter for my 52250 Honeywell Airfilter and put the model # into the search engine here at Amazon. This came up. ITS WAY TOO SMALL. AVOID this if you have a full height airfilter unit.

The filter seems to do a good job. It is not nearly as quiet as some reviewers mention, the sound is quite audible at night, but not irritatingly so. The ionizer switch lights up just as much as the built-in "night light." Ionizers are known to create ozone (see Consumer Reports.) The manual says not to use the ionizer if you suffer from asthma. Put all these together and it sounds like the ionizer is not completely safe. I recommend not using the ionizer when the room is occupied, or only for short periods of time. If it has been on for an extended period of time, let fresh air into the room before spending some time in the room.

This small air cleaner is best for very small areas. It sits atop my cat's litter box located in the bathroom and does an adequate job of controlling litter box odors between changes. It can also be mounted on a wall if you don't have a place for it to sit. Replacement filters are relatively expensive at $42.00. It's fairly quiet on low and has strong airflow. I think it's a too noisy and too small for the average bedroom. Permanent filter doesn't really mean permanent however. Permanent filters do become clogged over time and simply must be replaced. It's a decent little unit for very small areas.......recommended!!!!

Looks cute. Loud. and my place needs cleaning... nothing in the filter after 2 weeks of running. Blah!

this thing is pretty quiet, on high setting it just kinda fades into the background and it does it's job. awesome deal for the price.

I was going to wait awhile and review after I'd used the product a little longer, but based on my initial impression, I'm pretty disappointed with it. The unit looks fine and seems reasonably sturdy, but it's quite noisy, even at the lowest setting, and the fan emits a shrill whirring sound that does not seem like white noise to me. It's impossible to ignore it. It sounds like an airplane. Maybe the problem for me is it seems to be generating sound at a different frequency from the lower level hum of the air conditioner and computer in the room ( so the various fan noises are not harmonically 'in sync". ) It has a much higher pitch than my last air purifier, which I loved, but was discontinued. I still have that one, but can no longer find filters for it, so I only use it for white noise and as a fan. Worse yet, after using the Honeywell for a few hours (without the ionizer turned on and the door closed), the room actually started to smell terrible. I dont know if this equipment requires a 'break in period' to air out the harsh (chemical/smoke) smell of the filter, but it was a very unpleasant and irritating -- hardly what one wants in an air "purifier"! As for the noise -- on high it is much too loud - on low, I had to turn it off so I could watch tv and then get some sleep. My trusty old (Amcor HEPA tower) filter provided a steady unobtrusive low-pitched hum, a cool breeze, and genuine HEPA filtration and ionizer that made the air feel "good." This unit blows air out of the top, so if you want it to act like a fan with air aimed horizontally , you have to flip it on its side (which , on a positive note, also takes up a bit less room on the end table). Even in that position, though, with the output aimed strategically, it doesn't seem to be circulating much air, especially given the intensity of the fan. I'm willing to give it a try, so will leave it running while away from home today and will see if things improve noticeably. The room air was definitely worse with it on than with it off last night, and while this morning the chemical emissions were less noticeable, the air quality in the room had not improved noticeably. No dust seems to have been collected while the unit was on. I dont know if this is the way they ALL are, if this will improve after a 'break in period', or if this particular unit has a problem, but at this point I can't recommend it and probably will not keep it. To be fair, I'll give it a few days and report back and revise my review if the situation improves. Update: After almost a week I finally opted to return the unit. It made absolutely no difference in the air quality of the small bedroom (though, the noxious smell that emanated from it when I first used it abated after about two days), there was very little air circulating, despite the really loud fan, and no visible dust was collected. It was pretty obvious that this was doing nothing for the quality of the room air and it was so annoying when on, I had to turn it off at night . (I should probably add that I am accustomed to using a filter on the bedside table, but I moved it across the room, and it was still too loud.) I decided to shop for another option rather than just tolerating this one. On the plus side, kudos to Amazon for making the return easy. Their customer service is top notch, and I really appreciate it.

I got this in the midst of the ragweed season and have it on most of the time. It definitely helps banish the allergens since I am allergic to ragweed, mold and dust, among other things. It is super quiet on the low "Whisperclean" setting and simply soft quiet white noise on higher settings. There's even a "Quickclean" setting for more severe times: and this is the high speed. There is no ionizer, but I have no problem in not having one. The best part is that one does not need to buy filters. Just vacuum the permanent filter every 3-6 months. It can be set upright as a tower as well as horizontally and it has four adhesive feet with soft material on the outside that can be put on the unit for the horizontal position so it won't scratch furniture. There is a base for the "tower" position that can be easily removed if you place it horizontally. Very ergonomic and an excellent investment. They were really thinking when they designed this.

I wanted this for my bedroom. It was even more quiet than I expected. I've bought a few air cleaners over the past couple years and this one is the most quiet. On whisper setting I could barely hear it at all. It doesn't get much louder on medium setting. I like that I don't have to buy filters and can just use the vacuum when it's time to clean the filter. So far it works as advertised and I am happy with it. I am purchasing a second one for my son's room.

I ordered this air cleaner for my room in Iraq. It's very dusty here and I thought maybe it would help. 18 days after ordering I recieved an E-mail informing me that the order was canceled because of "lack of availability from the supplier". When I ordered the item, "IN STOCK" was prominently displayed on each page as I navigated through ordering. This is the second time I've had trouble getting an item. If you are ordering air products (cleaners, allergen control, etc...) I recommend some of the other sites. I've used amazon in the past and have had no issues with them until now. They seem to have little control over these products. I could have ordered elsewhere 18 days ago.

good looking air purifier and seems to be working fine. the permanent air filter is a major plus. others might consider it loud, but i can't sleep without it on now.

I received this air purifier two days after it shipped, which was great! So far I love how quiet it is and my allergies have improved.

Keeps the safe nice and dry never a problem with dampness just recharge them by plugging them in when the crystal balls go clear wait for them to be blue again about 24 hours is what I leave them for and they are ready to go back to work. One piece of advice when you plug them in if you have multiple units keep them apart. They do get hot and if they are close together there combined heat will melt there plastic housings. I learned this the hard way. I don't blame the product for this as I knew they get hot to purge the moisture in the crystals and I was careless. It is a great product for any kind of safe large or small.

I live in a 400 sq. ft. cottage. thought this would be perfect. Nope. The description says it doesn't need recharging for 60 days, but I end up having to plug it in every week or so. Probably best for walk-in closet sized rooms. After about a week, the scented insert was scented-no-more.

The instructions for the E-500 are vague, but I eventually figured out how to use the hook through the power prongs. One thing that is really confusing, and I think the cause of some 1 star reviews is the status window. The instructions say when the beads are blue, they are ready to absorb moisture, and when they are pink, they are at full capacity and need recharging. The status window where you view the beads is dark blue, and if you don't look closely, the beads will always look blue. If you can tell your eyes to ignore the blue background, you can see the true color of the beads. I think mine were pink for weeks before I discovered they were pink. Other than those two issues, this is a good product and works well. Like other reviewers have noted, you cannot just plug this into a wall outlet to recharge it. You need to plug it into a power strip so the plug goes downward into the outlet and the power strip can support the weight of the E500. It should recharge in a place where it can release the absorbed moisture. I recharge mine in the garage.

I bought this to fit into a walk in closet and then in a safe. The walk in closet was a little to big for this little guy although it did work just not enough. it's perfect for the safe. Plugging it in is easy. After about half a day it is not hydrated and I can put it back to do its job. I'm actually going to buy 2 for the walk in closet. It's easy to read and easy to discharge.

I bought two of this items to place in my bathroom and garage. They do not seem working at all :(

After using it the first time, tiny blood vessels appeared on my cheeks. Looks like it will be permanent damage. Afterwards, I've used it with the face a few inches away from the plastic and it didn't produce any effects on my nasal congestion (from allergies). I had better results with the Neti pot.

This is a great little steamer. I suffer from chronic sinus headaches, and often, steam is the only thing that will get rid of them. You do have to be careful not to put your face on the mask, as the steam is too hot. But overall, great product. Small, and gets the job done!

I bought this inhaler during spring allergy season. I am a singer and had a performance in June. My allergies were bad, and I was coughing, had lots of phlegm, and the coughing was irritating my throat. This inhaler was very easy to use, and was extremely helpful in helping me expectorate. It is great and inexpensive!

The steam generation is a bit weak. I would've preferred at least the option of generating more steam.

Eva-dry Electric Petite Dehumidifier Eva-dry Electric Petite Dehumidifier

It was great while it worked... but it's too expensive an item to DIE after only 11 MONTHS.

I purchased this unit for a small closet in our basement that includes our sealed sump pump and circuit breaker box. This closet for some reason gets damp and no air flows into there. This little dehumidifier pulls out the damp air and fills about every 4-5 days. I walk the water tank over to the other side of the basement and dump it into a floor drain. Takes maybe 2 minutes. Efficient little unit.

Purchased this back in May 2010 and it has held up thus far (ok, it's only been 3-4 months). I was running it 24/7 but found the electric plug was getting very hot, so since I fear overheating it, I now I run it about 12-18 hours/day. I bought this solely for use in the master bath (not a large room by any means) with no vent other than a window (stupid design). Each day it pulls ~5-10cc of moisture from the air. I figure every bit of moisture that gets sucked into this is less moisture in the bath! When I ran this continuously it never reached "full" but I think it would take probably a week to fill up entirely, so spillage does not seem to be a problem. Besides, emptying it out is easy as 1-2-3. OK so the biggest negative would have to be the noise. It's obviously quieter than a full sized dehumidifier but it's still pretty loud- not as loud as hair dryer but louder than electric razor. I could not sleep with it running in the adjacent bath so we shut the door. Sometimes the fan sounds choppy and I employ the unprofessional "solution" of smacking the device and the fan sound evens out. I pulled the vent off the top to peek inside and can see where the fan is housed. I suppose techies could jerryrig the fan somehow to make it quieter; I might look into trying that out myself. Bottom line, I would give this 3-3.5 stars because it works and pulls moisture out of the air. I'd limit it to just a small enclosed room, though. HOpefully it keeps working the rest of the year and beyond!

This is a great little dehumidifier for a small area. It does not have an automatic button that allows it to turn off and on depending on conditions. It does run all the time until it gets full. It is quiet though and does a good job for the area.

I bought two of these, and they worked great, but died after 6 months to a year of use. Do you notice you don't see any mention of a warranty in the product description? Now you know why. The price is way too high for something that won't last.

If you are like most other Americans, when it comes to purchasing an air purifier, you may make the decision to purchase one and then go right out and buy one. Although it is nice to get a product when you want it, often right away, there are disadvantages to doing so. Essentially, you may be purchasing a product that is poor in quality. Without the proper amount of research, you will never know.

As mentioned above, it is important that you examine the quality of an air purifier before purchasing it. You can easily do this online. A large number of online websites allow internet users to comment, rate, or write reviews on a product that they have purchased. These products also include air purifiers. If you know of anyone who uses an air purifier in their home, you may also want to think about asking them for suggestions. Feedback from those who own the same product is the best way to learn about the quality of it.

In addition to the quality of the product, it is also important that you examine the size of the air purifier you are interested in buying. When it comes to the size of an air purifier, you do not necessarily need to focus on the size of the actual machine, but you should focus on the size of the space that it is designed for. With cheaper, low-cost air purifiers, you will find that they only tend to treat the air in small rooms. These rooms commonly have a square footage of about 250-350 feet. If you are looking to treat the air inside a larger room, you may need to spend more money on a larger air purifier.

It is also important to consider the cost of an air purifier. Many individuals, regrettably, make a mistake when doing this. That mistake is believing that the purchase price is the only cost that they need to worry about. While there are some air purifiers that are filter-less, not all are. Many of these air purifiers, the ones that require filters, need to have their filters changed every so often. This can be as little as once every couple of years or as much as a couple of months. It is important that you keep the cost of replacement parts, including filters, in mind. When doing this, you may find that an otherwise low-cost air purifier turns into one that is too expensive for you to afford.

Since, in many cases, air purifiers are considered expensive, you are advised to look for air purifiers that come with warranties. In most cases, you will find that many air purifiers have a manufacturer’s warranty. That warranty typically tends to last about a year. If you are spending more than $400 on an air purifier, you may want to think about getting an extended warranty. If you purchase your next air purifier from a retail store, you may need to pay for the warranty. Despite possibly having to pay for an extended warranty, you will find that it is worth the cost. Should anything happen to your expensive air purifier, a warranty would, in most cases, prevent you from being out of luck.

The above mentioned points are just a few of the many that you need to take into consideration, when buying an air purifier. As previously mentioned, an air purifier can be a large purchase. That is why you are advised to fully research and examine all aspects of that purchase before making a final decision. It is the only way to make sure that you are not wasting your money.
