Whole House Air Purifiers: Do They Exist?

When shopping for an air purifier in your local department store, what do you tend to see? Many department stores only carry a limited selection of air purifiers. Many times these air purifiers are only designed to handle one or two rooms. Unfortunately, this leads many individuals to believe that there is no such thing as a whole house air purifier. The good news is that if you are looking for a whole house air purifier, you can have one because they do exist.

I had been purchasing this item in stores but have been having trouble finding them recently. Plus, Amazon's prices are almost half of what I had been paying. I received the actual Honeywell enviracaire brand pre-filter no. 38002 (not an off-brand substitute). Thanks Amazon!

....what's to review? yeah, it's a pre-filter. Nothing that's really performance related to talk about here, so I'll just say they are easy to fit, easy to put on, take off, and if you buy enough of them to get free shipping from amazon, they're a pretty good deal!

If I knew the filter replacements were going to be this crappy, I'd never have purchased the 17000. The filter, to work right, has to be doubled. That effectively doubles the price of the filters. The filters themselves look moth eaten, weak and flimsy, cheap and really laughable. Good old american product made by ebaneezer to save his buck and take ours.

This filter(from honeywell) still shed lots of carbon (black) particulate, especially when you have to cut to trim to size. These are very fine dust particles. Some of which i am sure clogged the HEPA. I dont believed previous report that said the Honeywell brand of pre-filter dont shed.

Simple to replace original filter, competitive price to other retailers. Air purifier has made a huge difference in allergy suffering!

When I leave this on I notice a noticeable reduction of visible dust in my room but it doesn't entirely get rid of it all. But hey, at this price point, it works... Also, I didn't really notice any reduction of allergies, it seems to only get rid of the dust in my room.

The filter seems to do a good job. It is not nearly as quiet as some reviewers mention, the sound is quite audible at night, but not irritatingly so. The ionizer switch lights up just as much as the built-in "night light." Ionizers are known to create ozone (see Consumer Reports.) The manual says not to use the ionizer if you suffer from asthma. Put all these together and it sounds like the ionizer is not completely safe. I recommend not using the ionizer when the room is occupied, or only for short periods of time. If it has been on for an extended period of time, let fresh air into the room before spending some time in the room.

This small air cleaner is best for very small areas. It sits atop my cat's litter box located in the bathroom and does an adequate job of controlling litter box odors between changes. It can also be mounted on a wall if you don't have a place for it to sit. Replacement filters are relatively expensive at $42.00. It's fairly quiet on low and has strong airflow. I think it's a too noisy and too small for the average bedroom. Permanent filter doesn't really mean permanent however. Permanent filters do become clogged over time and simply must be replaced. It's a decent little unit for very small areas.......recommended!!!!

Looks cute. Loud. and my place needs cleaning... nothing in the filter after 2 weeks of running. Blah!

this thing is pretty quiet, on high setting it just kinda fades into the background and it does it's job. awesome deal for the price.

Had this thing for a couple months now, and it works great. Loud, yes - on medium or high. Solution - we run it when we're at work, and when we're sleeping upstairs. When we're in the room, it's on low or turned off. The reduction in dust in our living room is significant, especially considering the space exceeds the maximum rating for the machine. Cuts down on allergies, stuffy nose, etc - overall works great. You can see from the accumulation on the pre-filter what the machine has saved you from breathing in. Well worth the money.

I moved out to a condo that is less than 2 miles from a rock quarry in the Azusa CA area. As a result, every time I run the AC, or open a window, nearly everything nearby is coated in a fine, gritty patina of dust. Lately this has been affecting my sleep the point that I'm waking up with a horrible raspy throat and runny nose. I decided to purchase this model for my living room and the Quietcare 17000 for my bedroom to see if I could improve the overall air quality in the condo and also minimize my issues that I was having going to sleep. I've had them for about a week now and I have to say the improvement is indeed quite noticeable. The air feels noticeably fresher and cleaner, I can't really describe it any other way. The odors from the adjoining kitchen (food, smoke, trashcan, recycling bin, etc) are effectively absorbed by this unit and the built-in fan circulates the air quite nicely as well. Sleep at night has also gotten better as well. I'm no longer waking up at night with a mouth and sinus cavity full of gunk and my throat is not nearly as sore as it used to be. I'd say the only downside is that the "Turbo" and "Home" settings (High and Medium for you and me) are noticeably, well...there's no way to mince words with this...they're freaking loud. Particularly Turbo. I'd say you can only really use these settings if you say leave for the day and not have anyone in the immediate vicinity of this device because at those levels the noise is quite overpowering and I doubt anyone could really do anything in the same room as this filter while it's on its maximum fan settings. Other than the leafblower levels of noise with its max fan settings, this is a fine HEPA air cleaner for your residence. The 384 sq feet of coverage is fantastic, it actually circulates the air in the room very well, and will allow you to improve the air quality inside your home very nicely. The permanent filter and the ability to clean it without outright replacing it is a welcome feature in today's tough economy.

We purchased the Honeywell 50250 several weeks ago after a fair amount of research. The filter works as promised. We both noticed great relief from allergies and sleep better too. It is a bit on the noisy side, we have it on low at night, and have gotten used to it. No problems at all.

We have had a Honeywell HEPA filter for over 10 years now and we decided to buy another one and put the old one in the garage. The new one pushes a lot of air...but then again, so does Grandpa. Oh, sure it cleans the air great in the high setting, but it will chase you out of the room like a visit from your mother-in-law, because its so loud. The low setting is tolerable but the humm does get to you after a while. You notice the quiet when you finally shut it off. We turn the new Honeywell on high at night, medium or low during the day, and low to off in the evenings.

I bought this 3 years ago and have had it plugged in and running almost all the time. It continues to work perfectly. The large circular filter only needs vacuuming every couple of months and the outer filter you change every three months. It takes an amazing amount of junk out of the air. It sits in my bedroom so it also provides a 'white-noise' background that is soothing. This unit is not ultra quiet but that's OK because it cleans the air so well. This unit is the real deal and not a light weight piece of junk. We love it.

Bought one of these for my son and he raved about it, so much, that I am now getting one for us. My son says that his room always smells fresh and that the filters are easy to clean. My main reason for getting this one is the permanent filters. The air purifier that we have now has $35 replacement filters. No more of that!

have two of them now. really help with keeping air cleaner. (less dust noted) is good for me. am getting more.

After endless reviews of humidifiers, i chose this one. Actually, i was getting quite frustrated and bought this one, feeling like they all stick and nothing is going to make me happy anyways. well, i was wrong. i chose this mid-price model and definitely got my moneys worth. i have been using it less than a month, but am very happy. it holds a gallon, but i use the mid-setting and the gallon lasts me two nights, plus a little extra. i found if i left it on the highest setting, the mist settled on my floor because i keep the room temperature too cold(which i need to sleep!)But even at the highest setting, it is very quiet. it has never leaked either. the only downfall is there is no automatic shut off. but for me, it doesnt matter. even after 2 nights(9-10 hours) there is some water in the reserve so i shut it off when i wake up. great buy in my opinion!

Both me and my husband got really sick with fever after just one use. The mist has a really stinky smell and it's not quiet at all. I would give it a zero or negative stars if I could!

If I could give ZERO stars I without a doubt would! DO NOT BUY this product. I bought this humidifer for my baby with a cold and he spent 5 days in the hospital and is now home on oxygen because he has chemical pnuemonia!! There was so much "WHIT DUST" using this for the first time that you could not see my babies crib!! We followed instructions carefully and were using bottled distilled water. We went to the store we purchased it, got a new one and did an experiment in our basement-- THE SAME THING HAPPEND! This happend 7 weeks ago and it has been a night mare...my perfectly healthy baby has undergone CT SCANs, X-rays, bronchioscopes needing general anesthesia, inhalers, prednisone, lasix---- all to try to make him better. Pulmonologist are stumped at what to do. THIS IS A SCARY PRODUCT----I CALLED THE -1800 number on the box and the women says they will not recall a product over a phone call!!! SCARY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also posted this review on the product page for this humidifier direct from Amazon.com. My wife and I bought this humidifier when she was about 8 months pregnant. She badly needed humid air to breath at night, but she couldn't abide too much noise. We tried three or four humidifiers before we landed on the Vicks Ultrasonic. After following the setup instructions, soaking the filter, and filling the unit with filtered (but not distilled) water, I turned it on about an hour before bedtime. We were pleased with the low-level, broadband hum the unit made and were initially quite pleased. Off we went to sleep. We awoke about 4 hours later in a room that looked like it was full of smoke. We actually thought the apartment was on fire. A quick check of the place, though, revealed that all of the "smoke" was only in our bedroom. My wife's voice was rough and gravelly -- it was like she had something in her throat that she couldn't clear. She also had sharp pains in her lungs when she breathed. I had the same symptoms, but less severe, with a "frog in my throat" and pain in my chest only when I breathed deeply. I evacuated her to the other bedroom and put a wet towel under the door. The fog had swept out of our bedroom and into the remainder of the apartment as soon as we opened the door. It took an hour to vent the apartment by opening every window and cranking the blower on the heat (it was mid-February). An inspection the next morning quickly revealed that the humidifier was to blame. It and the rest of the room were blanketed in a layer of super-fine "white dust," with the largest build-up on and immediately around the humidifier. It turns out "white dust" is somewhat common with "ultrasonic" or "ultrasonic impeller" humidifiers (google it). Our doctor prescribed "clean air" and albuterol inhalers to treat what our "chemical pneumonia" (aggravation of the lungs by a chemical agent and not a bacterium). It took two weeks for my wife's voice and lungs to return to normal. Needless to say, we have not used this unit since, nor will we ever experiment with an ultrasonic impeller (tip-off: a humidifier that uses a demineralization filter and not a wicking filter) humidifier again.

Got two of these. Both work fine. Both quiet and the price was a good one in a category in which many items are overpriced or noisey or both.

We bought this product to help with dry throats in the wintertime and with nightly use have been waking up in a far more agreeable state. Our hygrometer doesn't really go up at all, but the difference with my throat is undeniable. There are a few issues I have with this. 1.) The first is that is really isn't all that quiet. I have been sleeping fine with it on but it is far from a whisper. Also, the fan runs at full bore and any adjustment of the intensity only adjusts how dense the vapor is when it comes out. 2.) There is also a glowing green light to let you know that it is on, if the whirring noise and vapor spewing out didn't let you onto this. This just adds another intense light to your bedroom or wherever. 3.) You need to use distilled water in this or a white dust will accumulate everywhere. Also, a direct whiff of vapor revealed a strong mineral calcium smell. After a solid day of running, our 1,000 square feet looked smoky and dull, like a fog had rolled in. After switching to filtered water from a pitcher, things have gotten much better. 4.) Filling the thing is odd. You have to pluck out the blue water container, flip it over and twist off the lid. Why can't this be on the top? This just seemed odd. I'm a fan of "form follows function," so what's the function of having to flip the thing upside-down? Overall, after figuring out the filtering issue, I'm pretty happy with this thing, but I can foresee others being upset with some of the features. Do your research, figure out exactly what you need and what you are willing to spend and you may find yourself coming back to this model. Oh, and just so you know, this is a sonic humidifier. It uses sound to atomize the water... and everything else in the water! Keep this in mind before purchasing. Would you rather have your minerals in the air, or crusted onto some heating element or the like?

I have tried a number of different types of humidifiers, and this one is by far the best. It is the quietest humidifier I have used, and on its highest setting it can humidify a large room with no problem. The only drawback to this product is that the water sensor (found on newer models) must be cleaned every couple of days. I have very hard water and it has a tendency to build up scale on the sensor. If the buildup is too great the unit shuts off. Like all humidifiers, there is the potential for white dust, so unless you have very soft water you need to use the filter cartridge. I do need to recommend that everyone read the instructions first. If you look the the negative reviews on this site, you will find a number of people who refused to read the instructions before operating and then chose to blame the unit for problems that occurred.

This Vick's Ultrasonic V5100 humidifier is the BEST! Cold steam is reportedly best for combating colds and allergies. The Vick's Ultrasonic V5100 humidifier is very quiet-no noise, it uses regular tap water, running it for nine hours uses half the tank so you don't have to worry about running out of water while you sleep. Water is added by twisting open the tightly-fitted, grooved stopper at the bottom of the tank. The stopper lifts off a large, 5 inch diameter openning for adding water and easy cleaning. The cold steam pours in a strong, steady stream from a semi-circular, 2 inch diameter disk that rotates to any position in the room.

We bought 4 of these in less than a year and the same thing keeps happening. After about 2.5 months it puts out about half of what it once did and simply goes south from there. I called and got the same insturctions read to me that were in the handbook.... the vinegar thing.,.... sometimes it helped for a night or two... but no more.... How does the government continue to let companies sell defective product...... I gave it two stars because when it is new it can get our rooms over 60% humidity. I wouldnt buy any more...You shouldn't either...

If I could give ZERO stars I without a doubt would! DO NOT BUY this product. Honeywell HHT-145 HepaClean UV Antibacterial HEPA Tower 3-in-1 Air Purifier Honeywell HHT-145 HepaClean UV Antibacterial HEPA Tower 3-in-1 Air Purifier

I bought this purifier at Target because it was the most expensive one there so I figured it would work. After a week, it started making rattling noises on the low settings. The unit is very quiet but compared to other units I don't believe it moves very much air. It is cool looking but I doubt it's as functional as some of the other Honeywell Purifiers. The purifier also says HEPA clean, not true HEPA. So basically you're paying because the unit looks cool with nice lights. Don't buy it.

After only an hour started to make the cyclic motor noise as others have stated. I returned and the second unit did the same. Its a great concept but poor design.

This is an excellent purifier for home use. It reduces odor and dust in your house. At low fan speed, it is really quite. Value for the money.

I bought the HHT-145 about a year ago and always loved the unit - my allergies are very severe which includes my face and throat swelling. About eight months ago, my husband unplugged the unit and it stopped working and I never got it to come back on. I was about to throw it out and decided to try some things again. I took the air filters out and noticed a small button behind the top air filter. I noticed that when I put the top filter back in, it did not sit flush with the button, causing it to still protrude out. So I decided to tape the button as close to the unit as I could. I replaced the filters and after not working for eight months it came on! That's the only reason I rated this a five, otherwise I was going to rate it a 1. The unit really lessened my allergy symptoms and I'm on an EpiPen because of them.

I just received mine yesterday and had it set up in less than 5 minutes. I'm using it in my basement office to get rid of smoke and dog odors. I ran the unit overnight with everything turned on, and it smells great this morning! I also like the fact that it kills allergens, and other negative particulates. So far so good. :)

As previously mentioned, many department stores only carry a small selection of air purifiers. There are a number of different reasons why these air purifiers only tend to be air purifiers that are designed for small spaces, instead of the whole house. One of those reasons is because of limited floor space. In retail, retailers often try and place as many items inside their stores as they possibly can. Sometimes, larger items, especially items that may take up a large amount of space, are left out. The lack of space is why a large number of traditional department stores do not carry whole house air purifiers; however, it is important to note that some will.

If you are looking for a whole house air purifier, you are advised to check out your local home improvement store, especially if you would like to shop locally. Home improvement stores tend to have a focus on home improvement projects. Technically, improving the air inside your home, especially the whole house, can be considered a home improvement project. That is why a large number of home improvement stores carry a selection of air purifiers, including those that are designed for the whole house.

In addition to shopping at a local home improvement store, you should also be able to find whole house air purifiers online. In fact, if you are looking for the best prices or a larger selection of products, you may want to give online shopping some thought. With online shopping, you can easily compare prices, in a matter of minutes. When shopping online, you will want to search for the online websites of air purifier manufacturers, as well as the online websites of home improvement stores, home stores, or traditional department stores.

Although whole house air purifiers are ideal, especially if you want to clean up the air inside your whole house, you will often find that they are more expensive, when compared to most traditional air purifiers. In fact, whole house air purifiers can cost anywhere from three hundred dollars to a thousand dollars. Despite this high cost, you need to remember the cost of individual air purifiers. Depending on the number of rooms in your home, it is almost always cheaper to purchase a whole house air purifier instead of multiple air purifiers for each room. So, technically, in the long run, you may also be saving yourself money.

Whole house air purifiers work when they are attached to your home’s heating or cooling systems. Despite being attached to your heating or cooling systems, you may find that your whole house air purifier needs maintenance. This maintenance may include a replacement filter. Whether or not the air purifier of your choice needs replacement filters is extremely important. When purchasing an air purifier, especially one that needs to have its filters replaced, you need to examine the cost of those replacement filters. If they need to be changed on a regular basis or if the replacement filters are expensive, you may want to search for a cheaper alternative. It may take a little bit of work, but they are out there.
