Whole House Air Purifiers: Do They Exist?
When shopping for an air purifier in your local department store, what do you tend to see? Many department stores only carry a limited selection of air purifiers. Many times these air purifiers are only designed to handle one or two rooms. Unfortunately, this leads many individuals to believe that there is no such thing as a whole house air purifier. The good news is that if you are looking for a whole house air purifier, you can have one because they do exist.

Honeywell 38002 Enviracare Universal Replacement Pre-FilterReviewsI'm happy with it, but understand that it is thin and on a weight basis, has very little carbon in it. So I wouldn't expect it to do much. I have to say that this filter may be considered a "universal" filter, but it's only this way because you cut it to size.....hardly consider this universal if I have to do the work to make it fit. It does do what it's supposed to do, but would be nice if I didn't have to do the cutting on the product. exactly as pictured. i just wish i would get more than one filter for my model. I have purchased these replacement filters on a couple of occassions now and then work very well. I have a Honeywell 17000 and when (very easily) cut to size this filter makes a little over two full pre-filters for the air purifier. It is the exact same material that came with the 17000 in the box, and was the best price I could find on the internet(and I did my research). I am very satisfied. Average Rating:![]() |

The Honeywell Universal Carbon Prefilter fits all round Honeywell models. The activated carbon prefilter reduces odors and captures large particles to extend HEPA filter life. Should be replaced every three months. |

Honeywell HHT-011 Compact Air Purifier with Permanent HEPA FilterReviewsI bought this because my husband smokes, and I don't. Our computers, which we're on a good bit of the evening, are in a small 10x14 room. This little machine makes that much more bearable. I am very pleased with my purchase. Purchased unit because I wanted a small filter for dust and pollen for my bedroom. In my previous house I had a much larger unit that was both quiet and effective, but got rid of it when downsizing to a small apartment. This unit was just too noisy, even on the lowest speed, for me to sleep. Returned through Amazon's excellent return policy. Great Air Cleaner for Small Spaces and the price was very reasonable since it included S&H, Also easy to clean the filter I bought the Honeywell HHT-011 through Amazon.com. At first all was well and I was very pleased with the air quality produced by the Air Purifier. I'm currently deployed as a U.S. Army Soldier in Iraq and the air outside is normally filled with dust, dirt, and smoke from Iraqis burning stuff. I live in a Containerized Housing Unit (CHU) and bought the Honeywell HHT-011 for my 12' X 8' room room. I tend to have sinus issues when the air quality is poor. The fan was a little loud, but tolerable - I just had to crank up the TV or IPOD. The front grill did not fit snuggly on the unit and reflects on how the unit is cheaply made. However after about one month of use, the Honeywell HEPA Clean started to get louder and louder. It appears that the fan wheels are off center and have created a rattling noise. Now the Air Purifier is much louder and rumbles, rattles, and rolls. I've cleaned the filters (pre-filter and HEPA Filter) and the noise persists. This purchase was very disappointing since it's a quality of life issue. But, you get what you pay for. Reading other similar reviews, this sounds like a quality control issue with Honeywell. Be prepared to spend more for a quality unit. Thanks. My unit died after a week of use on 'high'. I would return it, but being overseas, it's not worth the cost, time, or trouble. I found a unit that was almost identical at a thrift shop and brought that home. I put the nice and clean filter from the honeywell into this new unit. It didn't last through the night, running on 'high'. Both fans are dead in the exact same way. The motor doesn't start, turn, hum, anything. It acts like it isn't getting any electricity. I've taken it apart and nothing seems wrong. I think the motor just burned out. So I'm going to call this one a loss. Now to look for a filter made by someone else. Average Rating:![]() |

Honeywell 18155 SilentComfort Permanent, True HEPA Air PurifierReviewsI needed an air cleaner for my apartment due to the fact that I am a medical marijuana patient in Los Angeles and I keep the windows closed most of the time and the air conditioner running. The unit is a little larger than I expected but was able to find a location that has it out of the way of foot traffic and also away from the ceiling fan. A magazine placed on top of the unit also helps to hide it at first glance. The sound that others have commented on is not an issue to me. I have used the unit on high only (no jokes please) and it sounds similar to a 20" box fan on low setting. Noticeable but not overbearing and if you live on a major street like I do the white noise is actually nice for sleeping yet does not interfere with sound from the computer speakers or tv. Waking up the first day after using it all night had me convinced this was worth the purchase. The air smelled clean and my nasal passages were clear, also I did not have the normal "bong cough" that many smokers have after years of medicating with medical marijuana. Another plus to me was that this unit does not have the uv light or ozone generating capability. It just cleans the air and also I have read of health issues from the units that generate ozone into closed areas. This product works well and does exactly what I expected it to do: purify air. I would reccommend. I don't have alot to say about this product other than I agree with other reviews it is rather large. I do not mind that and it seems to be doing a good job of filtering air in my apartment. We are on our second SilentComfort Air Purifier. We have had one of these that ran 24/7/365 for about 8 years and the motor bearing finally gave out. I think that was a lot of use and we got our money's worth on the first one. We replaced it with one exactly like it because we really missed the pleasant white noise it adds to our bedroom. Both the clean air and the soothing noise help us to sleep. Hope they are still making these 8 years from now. This purifier was shipped and delivered just as promised. Great deal and I love this purifier. It is much quieter than I was preparing myself for. And I love the design of it. Lightweight and easy to open to access the filters. I was stunned to see how much junk was in the air of my home. No wonder I have to dust constantly. Love this purifier and would recommend it to anyone!! Average Rating:![]() |

Honeywell High Velocity Dual Action Air Circulator FanReviewsDo not buy this fan if you are trying to make a room cooler in your home. I bought this and returned it after 2 days as all it did was make my apartment hotter!! It sounded good, dual action, high velocity, I figured it had to help a little bit. Boy, was I wrong!! If this fan is high velocity, I would hate to see their fans with low velocity!! All it did was circulate the hot air in the apartment and somehow make it hotter. I would not recommend this fan for purposes of cooling down a room at all!! I have been using this item for about two months now and I have noticed a decrease in quality of this item in comparison to another Honeywell Fan I have had for 6 years. This item is not as powerful as the Honeywell HT800 Super Turbo High Performance Fan, Black which I have owned and used exclusively for 6 New England Summers. The current of air that is projected from this item on high equals about the current that comes from my old Honeywell Fan on Low. I am only comparing a single fan on this item to the single fan on my old Honeywell Fan. The size of the electric motors on this item is noticably smaller than the one on my old Honeywell Fan as well. The flexibility of this dual fan item allows for multi-directional ventilation which is nice to have when coming home to an apartment that has been closed up while I'm at work on a summer day. With one fan pointed straight up toward the ceiling and the other blowing directly on me, I can relatively quickly start to reduce the temperature of my livingroom/kitchen area. The bottom fan on this item is quieter than the top fan, but they are both pretty quiet overall. The durability of this item seems to be very good with regard to the housing and titling mechanism. I would recommend this item if you are want a fan that has flexible features, but not if you need a very powerful fan for larger rooms. I love the idea behind this fan. Two fans (both have two speeds), the ability to independently adjust the positions of the fans. Adjustments are limited in their direction but it is still a good idea. Air output is ok but no more than ok. So, why only one star? Because I like to clean my fans. Fans get really dirty after they have been running awhile. The blades are usually covered in dust as are the protective grills surrounding them. That is why most fans are easy to take apart and put back together. NOT THIS ONE! The grills are held in place by 4 recessed screws that must be removed from the rear. I would suggest removing the screws inside a box or some sort of container that will prevent you from losing track of them as the drop out when the grill is lifted off. Once the grill has been removed you are finished removing things because the fan blades are not removable. The back portions of the grills are not removable either. So all you can do is wash the grill fronts and wipe off the rest of the parts (no easy task believe me). Now comes the really fun part. Putting the front grills back on. They have to be lined up in a very specific manner or all of the four holes will not line up with their companion holes on the grill backs. Two will line up easily but the other two won't. Keep turning the grill until all four holes line up. Once you get the holes lined up (I needed a flashlight to actually see the potential unions of the front and back grills) you have to get the screws back into the recessed holes. I suggest needle nose pliers for this part of the job. Once you get the screws into the holes you must tighten them down (no easy task when you can't see the place where the screws engage the threads. I will never attempt to take this fan apart again. I finally took it outside and used Dust Off to clean it as much as I could. If it gets really bad i will send it to Goodwill. The bottom line is that if you are fussy about cleaning your fans (as I am) this is not the fan for you. I was not impressed with the air flow output. I was looking for more bang for the buck. If you you do not need high cooling just mild air circulation then fine, just did not serve my needs. Note the fans are small size. This is a review for the 8700 model. Actual rating is a 3.5. This fan is made fully of plastic. The plastic is slightly durable. It does not feel like cheap plastic though, but it doesn't feel like high quality plastic either. The total height of the fan is 22", and with the handle it is 23" high. There are two fans, both the same size, and each fan is 9" in diameter. The top fan is stuck to the handle, so in order to angle that fan up or down, you just need to move the handle forward or backward. The bottom fan is on a separate hinge, so it can be moved up or down independently. You can have one fan facing downward, and the other angled up at the ceiling, or you can have both fans angled up at the ceiling to help with air circulation. The fans do a good job of circulating the air in a closed room, like a bedroom, but not in a room like a living room where it would have two openings (mine has an opening into the dining room and into the front door/foyer). This fan is mainly for bedrooms about 15' x 15' or smaller. There are two fan speeds, I or II, and the off setting (O). Regarding the noise, on setting I, the fans are somewhat quiet like a muffled whirr, but still can be heard well in a quiet room, although I can fall asleep with both fans on setting I. On setting II, the noise is kind of quiet like a muffled whirr, yet it is very noticeable, so you wouldn't want to have it on when you are trying to sleep, but you wouldn't mind it all if you had the TV on or had comapny over, or had something else to do that would occupy your mind. The noise is muffled (since it is plastic) and it doesn't sound like those metal fans because this is a plastic fan. I enjoy my fan. Glad I purchased it for my room, but I think I'll find a more powerful model for the whole house, maybe the 8800 series or higher. Average Rating:![]() |

Honeywell 50250 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air PurifierReviewsIt's a good investment if you suffer from allergies. It cleans the air well and is not to noisy. The Honeywell 50250 did a more than satisfactory job of cleaning air in our downstairs apartment of cigarette smoke and residues. We are very satisfied. We have a couple dogs, one who sheds 365 days a year, and a bunch of rescued cats. These things do a pretty good job, it's amazing how much dust and fur is on the pre-filter when I change it. This thing really pumps the air. The pre-filters are relatively inexpensive. The trade-off is noise, even on Low. It actually provides nice white noise for sleeping, and is good for times when you are not home, but when you are home and awake, trying to have a conversation, or watch TV, this filter is too loud. Would be nice if it had an "Ultra Low" setting. Have had this for about six months. It definitely works. How do I know this? Because since I have used it I have not needed to reguarly purchase kleenex boxes for the first time in probably a decade. I have serious allergies and typically go through a kleenex box in a week or two due to dust, etc. Now I only get kleenex when I have a cold. The only reason I game it four starts is because it's loud but its worth it... After much research, including using Consumer Report recommendations, the air purifier with the best reviews was the Honeywell 50250. I have used the purifier for almost 3 months, it was very easy to set up from the box, the filter is the type that you clean and re-use, and has a charcoal pre-filter! My wife and I both love it! The dust in our house has been reduced drastically! We do not have allergies so I cannot say it has reduced the allergins but the house does smell very fresh. I am VERY pleased with the unit and would recommend it to anyone looking for a unit that works well and does not cost an arm and a leg to operate and maintain. Average Rating:![]() |

Honeywell HFD-010 QuietClean Compact Tower Air Purifier with Permanent FilterReviewsAs an allergy sufferer I appreciate having air purifiers in the house to clean the dust, dander and other allergens from my breathing space. This honeywell quietclean is one of the best products on the market. It is quiet while the motor runs and is very good at it's job of purifying air. We've been using our Honeywell Air Purifier for a month now and and thus far find it a great little unit. We have it in our bedroom and have been doing some remodeling work in the attached bathroom, consequently, much fine dust is over everything. The unit is doing its job very well...as we can tell by the air in the bedroom and the amount of dust collected on the filter. And filter is a snap to clean, one of the easiest we've ever used. We're very pleased with our Honeywell, it does what the literature claims. We bought this one to replace a larger Honeywell tower that had burned out the motor bearings. We have a room dedicated to small parrots, and they produce a lot of dander that we don't want to spread into the rest of the house. Our old Honeywell worked well, but it was hard to clean and fairly loud. This new one is much quieter, and works just as well, filtering a great amount of dander out of the air. It is far easier to clean, and the fact that no filters ever need to be replaced was a major reason for our purchase. It is running constantly, but it is virtually unnoticeable. We have tried several air purifiers over the years, and this is by far the best we have had. I bought this product for my bedroom. The unit is fairly quiet. I like the fact that the filters could be cleaned instead of having to buy expensive replacements. I use natural mineral powder makeup, which causes a lot of dust. I used to have to dust all surfaces twice a week. The unit has cut that in half. I'm quite happy with it so far and have even recommended it to co-workers and friends. This is my second one...the first one came and had a slight strange sound....sent it back...this one is amazing...and u dont ever have to buy a filter....awesome....this thing takes in so much dust... Honeywell HHT-080 Permanent HEPA Tower Air PurifierReviewsLike the purifier enough to order a second one. Be careful and do not order items with one click checkout when it qualifiers for "Free shipping", you will be charged shipping and you have to be quick to cancel the order (I'm to slow) and if you are as dense as I am you will not be able to figure out how to contact AMAZON. I will never make the same mistake but will always be ready to tell someone about it. Thanks AMAZON!! Why buy an air purifier with 'permanent' air filters that have to be replaced if they get fouled? The filter CAN'T be washed! Although the unit functions well, this is a marketing sleight of hand to say they're 'permanent' yet must be REPLACED if they encounter 'smoke or other sticky particles'. Yes, I found this out to my shagrin. Your best bet would be to purchase a HFD-120 with washable filters! Of all the items I bought, this has been one of the most useful things. My wife and I suffer from allergies. Ever since we bought and used the Honeywell purifier, we have not had one sleepless night due to allergies. We leave the purifier on the medium setting all day and notice a difference in the air quality in a few minutes. You can hear it but it's not too loud. I highly recommend this product. I just bought the HHT-080. I moved into a apt share where the last roommate had a cat. I liked that the unit had both HEPA and ionic. I thought I'd comment on the "noisy" complaints I've read about. Low and medium is not noisy at all... not more than a fan at worst. The high setting is louder, but not any more noisy than an AC window unit. No rattles either. Unit seems stable and level. I can feel the air movement in my 10x15 room. Still need to see if it helps with my allergies. I bought this despite reading all the negative reviews of noise. I have also found that when it is on low you can barely even hear it, and with the tv on you can't. Certainly not unbearable. On medium it is a little louder but again, I can still hear my tv just fine. On the high setting it is loud, but again not unbearable, just turn up your tv a little, no you dont have to turn your tv all the way up either, it is equivalent to running a medium fan on high in the room. I have a fireplace insert and my place gets dusty, I have noticed my living room is less dusty and the air seems cleaner. Average Rating:![]() |

Honeywell HHT-145 HepaClean UV Antibacterial HEPA Tower 3-in-1 Air PurifierReviewsThis is an excellent purifier for home use. It reduces odor and dust in your house. At low fan speed, it is really quite. Value for the money. I bought the HHT-145 about a year ago and always loved the unit - my allergies are very severe which includes my face and throat swelling. About eight months ago, my husband unplugged the unit and it stopped working and I never got it to come back on. I was about to throw it out and decided to try some things again. I took the air filters out and noticed a small button behind the top air filter. I noticed that when I put the top filter back in, it did not sit flush with the button, causing it to still protrude out. So I decided to tape the button as close to the unit as I could. I replaced the filters and after not working for eight months it came on! That's the only reason I rated this a five, otherwise I was going to rate it a 1. The unit really lessened my allergy symptoms and I'm on an EpiPen because of them. I just received mine yesterday and had it set up in less than 5 minutes. I'm using it in my basement office to get rid of smoke and dog odors. I ran the unit overnight with everything turned on, and it smells great this morning! I also like the fact that it kills allergens, and other negative particulates. So far so good. :) This was given to me as a gift. It worked great for three days. Then I decided to move it into the bedroom. Turned it off, unplugged it, moved it to the bedroom, plugged it in....can NOT turn it on again. Have tried plugging it into every electrical outlet in the apartment--nada. The power light will blink a few times and then that's it. Called the company like the box instructed (specifically told to call if there are problems rather than returning the air cleaner to the store). Customer service was stumped after telling me to check to be sure the filters were in place, that the back grill was in place, and that I'd pushed the power button. She told me to bring it back to the store. Well, it was a gift, the store and the receipt are both over 500 miles away and this just sucks all around. Will never choose Honeywell again. I use this product in the bedroom. It freshens the air that my wife breathes in. She has chest cold and I decided to use UV antibacterial. It helped placebo or for-real it worked for her chest cold to go away. I let it on at 3 or 6 of 12 level setting of power 24 hours 7 days. So far electricity bill isn't any different than before and air is really fresh. Average Rating:![]() |

As previously mentioned, many department stores only carry a small selection of air purifiers. There are a number of different reasons why these air purifiers only tend to be air purifiers that are designed for small spaces, instead of the whole house. One of those reasons is because of limited floor space. In retail, retailers often try and place as many items inside their stores as they possibly can. Sometimes, larger items, especially items that may take up a large amount of space, are left out. The lack of space is why a large number of traditional department stores do not carry whole house air purifiers; however, it is important to note that some will.
If you are looking for a whole house air purifier, you are advised to check out your local home improvement store, especially if you would like to shop locally. Home improvement stores tend to have a focus on home improvement projects. Technically, improving the air inside your home, especially the whole house, can be considered a home improvement project. That is why a large number of home improvement stores carry a selection of air purifiers, including those that are designed for the whole house.
In addition to shopping at a local home improvement store, you should also be able to find whole house air purifiers online. In fact, if you are looking for the best prices or a larger selection of products, you may want to give online shopping some thought. With online shopping, you can easily compare prices, in a matter of minutes. When shopping online, you will want to search for the online websites of air purifier manufacturers, as well as the online websites of home improvement stores, home stores, or traditional department stores.
Although whole house air purifiers are ideal, especially if you want to clean up the air inside your whole house, you will often find that they are more expensive, when compared to most traditional air purifiers. In fact, whole house air purifiers can cost anywhere from three hundred dollars to a thousand dollars. Despite this high cost, you need to remember the cost of individual air purifiers. Depending on the number of rooms in your home, it is almost always cheaper to purchase a whole house air purifier instead of multiple air purifiers for each room. So, technically, in the long run, you may also be saving yourself money.
Whole house air purifiers work when they are attached to your home’s heating or cooling systems. Despite being attached to your heating or cooling systems, you may find that your whole house air purifier needs maintenance. This maintenance may include a replacement filter. Whether or not the air purifier of your choice needs replacement filters is extremely important. When purchasing an air purifier, especially one that needs to have its filters replaced, you need to examine the cost of those replacement filters. If they need to be changed on a regular basis or if the replacement filters are expensive, you may want to search for a cheaper alternative. It may take a little bit of work, but they are out there.
